November 25th 2018: the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. It reminds us of the many women and girls who suffer injustices and violent abuses daily and everywhere.
Despite the efforts of the International community to punish such abominable acts, women being victims of sexism and brutality is a widespread reality that still exists in 2018. Rape and the denial of all reproduction rights are very common, mostly due to ignorance, respect and cultural lack of equality.
Vulnerability in the face of today’s main widespread issues is indeed felt by everyone, not just women; but in times of conflict, their social status is particularly aggravated inasmuch as they belong the most to discriminating environments. The point is that the world’s condition will never get better if it will keep being dominated by the supremacy of few powerful people with a masochistic consideration of reality, who promote inequalities for the sake of their wellbeing only.
Women’s activism has always sensitized and pressured the population to fight and improve the corrupted mechanisms of our societal, educational and economic system and it needs support, instead of being cruelly silenced.
Furthermore, “The personal is political”: the 60s students and second-wave feminism motto should be everyone’s motto. In this context, it affirms that women’s emancipation is inevitably peculiar to the realization of peace and freedom of every single person on this planet.
It is evident that traumas that are experienced physically and psychologically by a fundamental pillar of all societies, women (if transsexual and of colour, even more!), are worsening EVERY citizen’s life, directly or indirectly.
In international law, crimes against women are considered crimes against humanity, therefore their elimination from our future MUST BE A COLLECTIVE DUTY.
